Sonic Healthcare’s Australian pathology practices are collectively the largest provider of private pathology in Australia. The state-of-the-art laboratories and extensive network of collection centres serve each state and territory capital, as well as regional and remote Australia.

Our Australian pathology practices have long term connections to the communities in which they operate. Their laboratories play an important part, delivering high-quality pathology testing to doctors and patients while providing employment to the local community.  

In 2010 Sonic Healthcare collaborated with Best Practice to develop electronic pathology ordering (eOrdering). This initiative, which enables the secure transmission of the pathology request directly to the laboratory information system, is available at all Sonic Healthcare Australian laboratories. Over the past decade, continual updates, such as the option to enable pathology result uploads to My Health Record, ensure that its functionality keeps pace with the rapidly changing needs of clinical care.

The availability of eOrdering during the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that doctors who provide telehealth consultations have a paperless solution for pathology requesting. eOrders are delivered securely by SMS directly from the laboratory information system to the patient, eliminating the complication of providing a hardcopy request form to the patient.
